In September
1988, at the time of the Seoul Summer Olympics,
Reverend Moon first announced his vision for
the establishment of a World Culture and Sports
Festival (WCSF). He had taken an intense interest
in the Seoul Olympics, an extraordinary event
that involved 160 nations and brought together
the adversaries in the Cold War. He saw this
as a providential moment, a major opportunity
for peace.
While inspired with the Olympic ideal,
Reverend Moon believed that this kind of international,
global event should be based on something
deeper than the ideals of international cooperation,
athletic excellence, discipline, competition
and sportsmanship. World peace is founded
on deeper ideals of love and community that
arise out of family life, are guided by religion,
and are expressed in the arts. It also requires
the concerted efforts of educators, scientists,
politicians, students and journalists. Should
not the leading practitioners in these fields,
each an essential building block of the edifice
of peace, also be included in an Olympic-size
celebration of the ideal of world peace? |
