BUILDING
AN INTERNATIONAL
WOMEN¡¯S PEACE
MOVEMENT
At diverse
forums, WFWP
addresses issues and concerns of the international
community and presents its unique approaches
to solving these problems. At each meeting,
the many women leaders from every race and
culture who attend come to feel a strong sense
of sisterly solidarity. They affirm their
belief that the world is one and humanity
is one
family. These meetings are invaluable moments
for women to share experiences and wisdom
on their role as peacemakers. WFWP
has convened four major conferences of women
leaders from around the world in Korea. It
organized workshops at the NGO forum of the
UN sponsored Fourth World Women's Conference
in Beijing in August 1995. In June 1998 WFWP
cosponsored a public talk at the United Nations
Headquarters in New York on

the
issue of female genital mutilation. It coordinated
a workshop on family ethics and values at
the 1999 International Conference of NGOs
in Seoul.
WFWP
has held women's conferences in the
Middle East since 1997. The Third Women's
Conference for Peace in the Middle East, convened
in Nicosia, Cyprus in May 1999, was the first
opportunity for the women leaders from Israel
and Palestine to sit and talk at the same
table. A significant result of this conference
was the creation of The Nicosia Declaration
and Statement to the High Level Segment of
ECOSOC. These contain recommendations for
action to solve the problem of poverty and
to create a foundation for peace and prosperity
in the Middle East.
